Refined wedding photography with calm direction, natural moments, and an elevated visual approach for celebrations in San Francisco, Napa Valley, and beyond.

Weddings photographed with calm direction and a refined eye

From intimate celebrations to full wedding days, I photograph weddings with a focus on natural moments, thoughtful composition, and a polished visual experience. My approach is calm and unobtrusive, while still giving couples the guidance they need to feel comfortable, present, and fully themselves in front of the camera.

Why Couples Choose Ethan Liu Photography

How I Approach a Wedding Day

Every part of a wedding holds something different. Some moments need space to unfold naturally, while others benefit from a little guidance. My approach is to photograph the day in a way that feels calm, thoughtful, and true to the experience — while creating images that still feel polished, intentional, and lasting.

Portraits That Still Feel Like You

Portraits should feel refined without feeling forced. I guide them in a way that feels natural and comfortable, creating images that feel connected, flattering, and true to who you are.

The Ceremony, As It Actually Felt

The ceremony moves quickly, but it holds some of the most meaningful moments of the day. I photograph it with a quiet, observant approach, paying attention not only to what happens, but also to the emotion and reactions that surround it.

Finding the Best Light, Naturally

Light shapes so much of how a wedding feels in photographs. Throughout the day, I am always paying attention to where the light is best — whether that means soft window light, open shade, direct sun used intentionally, or the atmosphere of a darker reception space. The goal is to create images that feel natural, flattering, and true to the mood of the day.

The People Around You

A wedding is not only about the two of you, but also about the people who are part of it. I pay attention to the reactions, embraces, laughter, and quieter in-between moments among your guests, so the gallery reflects not just how the day looked, but the people who helped shape it.

The Celebration as It Unfolds

As the day opens up into dinner, toasts, and the celebration that follows, I document it in a way that feels both natural and intentional. From the energy in the room to the quieter interactions happening in between, the goal is to preserve not just how it looked, but what it felt like to be there.

Polished, Without Feeling Overdone

A big part of how a wedding is remembered lives in the final edit. My editing approach is refined and intentional, bringing out the beauty of the light, color, and atmosphere without pushing the images too far. The goal is always for the photographs to feel timeless, natural, and true to the day as it actually felt.

Wedding Coverage FAQ

How far in advance should we book?

I usually recommend reaching out at least 6 months before the wedding day, and ideally around a year in advance if you want to make sure your date is still available. Some weekends book earlier than others, especially during the busiest parts of the season.

Do you help with the wedding day timeline?

Yes. A good timeline makes a big difference in how the day feels and in how much space there is for meaningful photographs. I’m always happy to help guide the flow of the day so the photography feels natural, efficient, and well-paced.

Do you offer engagement sessions?

Yes. Engagement sessions can be added for couples who want a more relaxed session before the wedding day, and they can also be a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding.

How many hours of coverage do most couples need?

For many weddings, 6 hours of coverage is a strong starting point and often works well for the key parts of the day. If you’d like more room for details, a more relaxed timeline, and fuller coverage overall, 8 hours is usually the better fit.

Do you offer a second photographer?

A second photographer can be added when the wedding day would benefit from additional coverage, especially for larger celebrations, multiple locations, or timelines where more than one perspective is helpful. If that feels like the right fit for your wedding, I’m happy to talk through it with you.

How long does it take to receive our photos?

Full wedding galleries are typically delivered within 4 to 8 weeks after the wedding day. Turnaround can vary a little depending on the season and the scope of the celebration, but the goal is always to deliver a gallery that feels carefully edited, polished, and complete.

Are all of the images edited?

Yes. All final images are carefully edited for color, tone, and consistency so the full gallery feels polished and cohesive. Additional retouching for selected images can also be added if needed.

Are you available for travel?

Yes. I photograph weddings throughout San Francisco, Napa Valley, and the Bay Area, and I’m also available for celebrations beyond that. Travel fees may apply depending on the location and scope of the wedding, and I’m always happy to provide the details once I know more about your plans.

How do we officially reserve our date?

Once we’ve confirmed that your date is available and the coverage is the right fit, I’ll send over the next steps to make everything official. Your date is secured once the agreement is signed and the retainer is paid.
