San Francisco City Hall Wedding FAQ

How much coverage do we need for a San Francisco City Hall wedding?

For most couples, 2 hours is the best foundation for a San Francisco City Hall wedding. Between check-in, ceremony timing, witness greetings, family portraits, and moving through the building for photos, the day often unfolds more naturally than a strict appointment time suggests.

Timelines shorter than 2 hours can feel rushed, especially if the ceremony starts later than expected or if you want portraits in multiple areas of City Hall. A 2-hour collection keeps the experience calm and allows space for the ceremony, family photos, and relaxed portraits. If you would like an additional San Francisco portrait location or a small celebration afterward, coverage can be extended to 3 or 4 hours.

Do you assist with the timeline and location planning?

Yes. I’m happy to help guide the timing, location flow, and overall photography plan so the day feels smooth, relaxed, and natural.

When should we schedule our ceremony for the best light?

Because City Hall is a grand indoor space with massive windows, the lighting shifts beautifully throughout the day. Generally, mid-morning and late afternoon offer gorgeous, soft light and slightly smaller crowds. Once booked, I work closely with you to choose the best ceremony slot based on the season.

How far in advance should we book?

Because City Hall ceremonies take place on weekdays, prime Friday and Thursday dates fill up exceptionally fast. I recommend reaching out as soon as your ceremony date is confirmed—or even before—to ensure my availability matches your plans.

Do we need to book our marriage license and ceremony slots separately?

Yes. San Francisco City Hall requires two separate appointments: one to obtain your marriage license and one for your actual civil ceremony. You can book them on the same day (usually at least an hour apart) or on separate days. I provide all of my booked couples with a step-by-step planning guide to make this process incredibly simple.

Can we add additional locations to our City Hall coverage?

Absolutely. Many couples choose to add a nearby San Francisco location after their City Hall ceremony for a more personal portrait session or an intimate celebration. If you’d like to include an additional location, I will seamlessly help plan the timing so your day remains completely smooth, elegant, and relaxed.

How many guests can we have?

The standard civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall allows up to six guests. If you’re planning a larger celebration with family and friends, I recommend looking into City Hall’s private balcony rentals, which can accommodate larger guest counts and offer a more private, elevated experience inside the building.
